Rotherham United are entering a crucial period as they prepare for life in League Two following a disappointing campaign that ended in relegation from League One. After finishing 23rd in the standings, the Millers now face the challenge of rebuilding their squad and restoring confidence ahead of the new season.

The club has appointed former defender Alex Bruce to oversee the rebuilding process at the AESSEAL New York Stadium. His immediate objective will be to reshape the squad into one capable of challenging for promotion back to League One at the first attempt. Given the expectations surrounding a club of Rotherham’s stature, supporters will be hoping to see significant improvements both in performances and results.

Several areas of the team are expected to be strengthened during the transfer window, but the club must also deal with growing interest in some of its standout performers. Among those attracting attention is striker Sam Nombe, whose performances last season made him one of the few positives in an otherwise difficult campaign.

Despite Rotherham’s struggles as a team, Nombe consistently demonstrated his quality in front of goal. His work rate, movement, and finishing ability allowed him to stand out even as the club battled near the bottom of the table. His individual displays have naturally attracted interest from clubs competing at a higher level.

Reports have suggested that League One side MK Dons submitted an offer worth around £500,000 for the forward, although Rotherham rejected the proposal almost immediately. The decision indicates that the Millers value the striker more highly and are unwilling to allow one of their most important attacking players to leave without receiving what they consider an appropriate transfer fee.

Speaking about the situation, Alex Bruce admitted that he would not be surprised if Nombe eventually departs before the transfer window closes. However, he stressed that any move will only happen if a buying club meets Rotherham’s valuation.

Bruce explained that Nombe has impressed him since pre-season began, praising the striker’s quality and professionalism. At the same time, he acknowledged the reality of the transfer market, noting that talented players often attract interest. According to the manager, the club will only sanction a sale if the financial package is satisfactory for everyone involved. Should no club meet Rotherham’s asking price, Bruce made it clear that the striker will remain at the club.

Nombe’s importance to the team was evident throughout last season. He finished the campaign with 12 goals in 31 league appearances, making him one of Rotherham’s most productive attacking players. His goals provided valuable moments during a difficult year, and without his contributions, the team’s struggles could have been even more severe.

Another factor influencing the situation is the player’s contract. With only one year remaining on his current deal, Rotherham must carefully consider their options. Selling him this summer could allow the club to generate a significant transfer fee, whereas keeping him without agreeing to a contract extension raises the possibility of losing him for nothing when his deal expires.

Whether MK Dons return with an improved offer remains uncertain, but the interest is unlikely to disappear. Nombe has shown that he possesses the ability to perform consistently at League One level, making him an attractive option for clubs with ambitions of competing near the top of the division.

As the transfer window progresses, Rotherham face an important decision. Retaining one of their best attacking players could strengthen their promotion bid, while selling him for the right price would provide funds that could be reinvested into multiple areas of the squad. Whatever the outcome, Nombe’s future is expected to remain one of the club’s biggest talking points in the weeks ahead as Alex Bruce continues to reshape his team for the challenges of the new season. If you’d like, I can also rewrite this in the style of a Football League World, BBC Sport, or Sky Sports transfer feature while keeping it entirely original.
