Andrew Johns shuts door on Newcastle Knights move with ‘unfair’ family detail behind call…..
Club legend Andrew Johns has emphatically shut down the idea of coaching the Knights in any capacity having suggested he is isn’t interested in the role with the Newcastle hierarchy set to announce the exit of Adam O’Brien. The Knights are set to become the second club to part ways with their coach with only a couple of games left to go in the season with the race on to find a replacement.
O’Brien met with the club’s hierarchy earlier this week and the Knights are expected to confirm O’Brien’s exit on Thursday. This is despite the Newcastle coach still having two more seasons to run on his current deal….
Knights fans have always wondered if legendary halfback Johns would come into the coaching ranks at the club and guide them back to their glory days. The club legend works full time as a Channel Nine analyst and moved to Sydney after his footy career.
Johns has helped the club out since his retirement in 2007, but never went into coaching. Whenever the Knights have been in turmoil his name, and his brother’s, have been tossed around as potential candidates to help steady the ship. But when it was put to him over whether he would consider a role, Johns emphatically shut down the idea due to where he is right now.
