“I Should Never Have Left”: Gordon Cowans Reflects on His Biggest Regret
Aston Villa legend Gordon Cowans, widely regarded as one of the greatest players ever to wear the claret and blue, has opened up about his deepest career regret — leaving Aston Villa. In an emotional reflection, Cowans admitted that stepping away from the club he called home was the hardest and most painful decision of his footballing life.
“I should never have left Villa,” Cowans confessed. “That club gave me everything — my debut, my pride, and the greatest memories of my career. I thought the grass might be greener elsewhere, but nothing ever compared to Villa Park.”
Cowans, affectionately known as “Sid,” made over 450 appearances for the club, playing a vital role in Villa’s 1980–81 First Division title and their historic 1982 European Cup triumph. His vision, technique, and leadership made him a fan favourite and a true symbol of Aston Villa’s golden era.
Now reflecting on a remarkable career, Cowans says the love from Villa fans remains unmatched. “Aston Villa wasn’t just a team to me — it was my life,” he added. “If I could turn back time, I’d never have walked away.”
For Villa supporters, Gordon Cowans remains forever one of their own.
