Former Sheffield United defender Anel Ahmedhodžić has admitted that leaving Bramall Lane was the biggest mistake of his professional career after his summer transfer away from the Blades failed to live up to his expectations.
The 26‑year‑old centre‑back, who was a fan favourite during his three‑year spell at Sheffield United, completed a move to Dutch giants Feyenoord in the summer transfer window. The Bosnian international played over 100 times for the Blades, helping the club through promotion battles, a Premier League campaign, and a strong Championship season — endeared to supporters with his commitment and leadership.
However, months on from his switch abroad, Ahmedhodžić has struggled to adapt to life outside South Yorkshire. Limited starts, tactical differences and injuries have all hampered his momentum, leaving him questioning whether the decision to leave was the right one.
“I didn’t realise how much Sheffield United had shaped me — on and off the pitch,” he said in a recent interview. “Bramall Lane, the fans, the players — that connection meant everything. I thought moving to Feyenoord was the next step, but I underestimated what I was leaving behind.”
Sheffield United this season have undergone significant changes, bringing in new faces while continuing their fight for promotion back to the Premier League. That progression — paired with Ahmedhodžić’s personal challenges — has only deepened his regret.
Supporters still praise his contributions, recalling key goals and solid defensive displays that made him one of the standout performers in recent Blades squads. Yet watching his former club rebuild while he fights for form has been a sobering experience.
“I miss the energy at Bramall Lane — that roar, that belief,” he added. “I’d give anything to have another crack at it with the Blades. I walked away from something truly special.”
Although nothing official has been discussed yet, Ahmedhodžić hasn’t ruled out one day returning to Sheffield United, saying Bramall Lane will always feel like “home.”
