Borussia Dortmund have reportedly “once again considered” a move for Chelsea defender Renato Veiga, according to multiple reports from January 2025. The German club showed interest earlier in the winter transfer window, hoping to secure Veiga on a loan deal with an option to buy. However, negotiations stalled as Chelsea insisted on either a permanent transfer or a loan with an obligation to buy—something Dortmund were unwilling to commit to.
Veiga, who joined Chelsea in the summer of 2024, has struggled for consistent game time at Stamford Bridge. He is primarily a centre-back but can also operate as a defensive midfielder. The player was reportedly open to a short-term move to secure more regular minutes in his favoured centre-back role, which made Dortmund an appealing destination. However, Veiga only wanted a six-month loan, while Chelsea remained firm on including a purchase obligation in any deal, due to their long-term plans and valuation of the player.
Chelsea reportedly valued Veiga at around £20 million, a price tag that Dortmund found too high given their financial constraints and their interest in a short-term solution. Despite these hurdles, Dortmund revisited the possibility of a deal multiple times throughout January, hence the reports of them “once again considering” the Portuguese defender. However, progress was limited due to the differences in financial and contractual expectations.
Complicating matters further, Juventus entered the race later in the month and were reportedly willing to match Chelsea’s demands. This shift put pressure on Dortmund, who were not in a position to enter a bidding war. While Veiga was still interested in a move away from Chelsea for more playing time, it appeared unlikely that Dortmund would be able to meet Chelsea’s conditions.
Ultimately, despite Dortmund’s recurring interest and multiple rounds of discussions, no deal was finalized. The German club’s desire for a low-risk loan conflicted with Chelsea’s insistence on a sale or guaranteed future fee. While the transfer didn’t materialize, the situation highlighted Veiga’s desire for more minutes and Dortmund’s ongoing search for defensive reinforcements. Whether the German club revisits their interest in the summer remains to be seen, but for now, Renato Veiga remains a Chelsea player.
