Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has openly admitted that he would “love” to bring a £35 million-rated Premier League midfielder to St James’ Park, as the club continues to weigh up potential reinforcements ahead of the January transfer window.
Although Howe did not disclose the player’s name directly, reports suggest Newcastle have been monitoring a number of midfield options, with speculation pointing towards a dynamic, box-to-box talent who is already well-established in the English top flight. The club’s growing ambitions, backed by their Saudi-led ownership, mean they are targeting proven Premier League performers capable of making an immediate impact.
Speaking after Newcastle’s 1–1 draw last weekend, Howe stressed the need for depth in his squad. “We’re always looking to improve, and if an opportunity comes up to sign a midfielder of real quality, I’d love us to be able to do it,” Howe said. “The Premier League is a demanding league, and with the extra commitments we have now, we need players who can step in and raise the level.”
The Magpies, who will be competing in Europe once again this season, have already been linked with a handful of midfield stars. A signing in the £35 million bracket would represent a significant outlay but remains in line with the club’s investment strategy. Newcastle’s recruitment has been shrewd under Howe, with players like Bruno Guimarães, Sandro Tonali, and Alexander Isak arriving to strong effect.
The need for another midfielder has become more pressing after Tonali’s suspension and ongoing fitness concerns for other squad members. Howe admitted the balance of his team could be improved with the right addition. “We’ve had to shuffle things around quite a bit,” he explained. “It’s important that we have options in midfield who bring energy, control, and creativity. That’s an area we’re monitoring closely.”
While fans are eagerly speculating about who the £35m target could be, club insiders suggest negotiations are at an early stage. Whether Newcastle can land their top choice in January may depend on rival interest and Financial Fair Play considerations.
For Howe, however, the message is clear: Newcastle are not content to stand still. “We want to push on and compete with the very best,” he said. “To do that, you need players who can handle the intensity of the Premier League and make a real difference.”
