Breaking: Millwall man might be on his way out of crucial promotion chase due to limited minutes of play – “I need more minutes.”
Millwall’s push for promotion could take an unexpected twist, as loanee Thierno Ballo faces an uncertain future at The Den amid growing concerns over his limited game time.
Despite the Lions being in a strong position to challenge for automatic promotion in the Championship, Ballo has struggled to cement a regular place in Alex Neil’s side in recent months. The 24-year-old winger, who arrived on loan with an option to buy, has found himself largely on the fringes during a crucial stage of the campaign.
Millwall showed their credentials with a solid 1-1 draw against fellow promotion contenders Ipswich Town last weekend, underlining the strength and depth within Neil’s squad. However, that same depth has made it difficult for several players, including Ballo, to secure consistent minutes.
While the Austrian has featured across multiple attacking roles this season, his impact has faded in recent weeks. Since February, he has been limited to brief substitute appearances, accumulating just 15 minutes of action. With players like Femi Azeez and Camiel Neghli firmly holding their spots, breaking back into the starting XI has proven challenging.
Ballo’s overall record of one goal and five assists in 28 appearances suggests flashes of quality, but inconsistency has held him back. His last assist came in December, and a lack of goal contributions since then has not helped his case.
Still, there is a sense that his moment could yet arrive. With seven games remaining and promotion on the line, squad rotation and tactical changes could open the door. Ballo’s versatility and attacking threat mean he could yet play a decisive role if called upon.
However, time is running out to prove his worth. Millwall must soon decide whether to activate the option to make his move permanent, and his lack of minutes has made that decision increasingly complex.
For Ballo, the message is clear: he needs more minutes—and fast. Whether that opportunity comes at Millwall or elsewhere may ultimately shape both his future and the club’s promotion ambitions.
