The Boston Red Sox have addressed a clear roster need by signing a versatile infielder, according to multiple reports. On Wednesday night, the team officially reached an agreement with Isiah Kiner-Falefa, securing his services on a one-year contract worth $6 million. The signing was first reported by MassLive’s Chris Cotillo.

Boston had been actively searching for a reliable utility infielder, and Kiner-Falefa fits that role well. Now 30 years old, he brings experience, defensive versatility, and a proven track record to the Red Sox. He most recently played for the Toronto Blue Jays and has also spent time with other American League East rivals, including the New York Yankees.

Kiner-Falefa, a native of Honolulu, Hawaii, began his professional career after being selected by the Texas Rangers in the fourth round of the 2013 MLB Draft. Although he initially came up through the minor leagues as a partial catcher, his major league career has largely been defined by his work around the infield.

He spent his first four MLB seasons with the Rangers, highlighted by the shortened 2020 season when he earned a Gold Glove Award at third base. Following his time in Texas, Kiner-Falefa joined the Yankees, where he played during the 2022 and 2023 seasons and gained further exposure in the AL East.

His recent years have been marked by frequent movement. In 2024, he split the season between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Pittsburgh Pirates, beginning the year in Toronto before being traded. During the 2025 season, he made the reverse journey, moving from Pittsburgh back to Toronto midway through the year.

Offensively, Kiner-Falefa is a career .262 hitter with a .660 on-base plus slugging percentage. While he is not known for power—his career high for home runs in a single season is eight—he contributes in other ways. In 2025, he stole 15 bases, showing his ability to add value on the basepaths. His offensive profile centers on making consistent contact rather than driving the ball out of the park.

Defensively, his ability to play multiple infield positions and his contact-oriented approach at the plate align well with what the Red Sox were seeking. Those skills should allow him to fill several roles as needed while providing steady, dependable play.

With this signing, Kiner-Falefa will now suit up for his third team within the American League East. Given his history with division rivals, he will be a familiar presence to fans and opponents alike as he looks to make a meaningful contribution in Boston.
