The Detroit Red Wings could be on the verge of adding even more size and experience to their defensive unit as the NHL trade deadline approaches.

According to a report from TSN insider Darren Dreger, Detroit has made a formal trade offer for towering Vancouver Canucks defenseman Tyler Myers. The 6-foot-8 blueliner was notably held out of Vancouver’s recent matchup against Winnipeg, a move widely interpreted as precautionary while trade discussions intensify. Dreger indicates that the Red Wings are the team behind the offer currently under consideration.

Detroit’s interest aligns with its need for a dependable second-pair defenseman ahead of the March 6 trade deadline. The organization is reportedly looking for someone who can handle tougher defensive assignments, allowing rookie Axel Sandin-Pellikka to shift into a more sheltered third-pairing role where matchups would be less demanding.

Myers appears to check several of the Red Wings’ boxes.

A right-handed shot, he would likely slot in alongside left-shot defenseman Ben Chiarot, creating a balanced pairing. Importantly, Myers is not a short-term rental — something general manager Steve Yzerman has typically avoided. He has one year remaining on his contract at a relatively manageable $3 million cap hit, making him a cost-effective option compared to higher-profile names such as Dougie Hamilton of New Jersey or Justin Faulk of St. Louis.

At 36 years old and in his 17th NHL season, Myers would bring veteran stability rather than offensive flash. He has recorded one goal and seven assists in 57 games this season, but his value lies more in his defensive responsibilities. Averaging over 20 minutes of ice time per game (20:13), he serves as a primary penalty killer and remains a reliable shot-blocker, averaging nearly five blocks per contest. While not overly physical, his reach and positioning continue to make him effective in a shutdown role.

There is, however, one hurdle: Myers holds a full no-movement clause in his contract, meaning he must personally approve any trade. The Dallas Stars are also reportedly in the mix, and Myers is said to be weighing his options carefully before making a decision.

If completed, the deal would further increase the size of Detroit’s blue line. The Red Wings already boast 6-foot-6 Simon Edvinsson and 6-foot-3 defenders Moritz Seider and Chiarot. Adding the 6-foot-8 Myers would make Detroit one of the most physically imposing defensive groups in the league — a potential statement move as they look to solidify their playoff push.
