Jhon Solís recently spoke with ESPN South America about several topics, with much of the discussion focusing on his current spell at Birmingham City F.C..
The Colombian midfielder joined the Championship side in January on loan from Girona FC. Reports previously indicated that Birmingham City paid around €500,000 for the loan, while also securing an €8 million option to make the deal permanent.
Since arriving at St Andrew’s, the 21-year-old has become increasingly involved, featuring in nine matches and accumulating 637 minutes on the pitch. His early performances have also drawn positive attention from Colombian media.
Chose Birmingham City despite other offers
Solís explained that he decided to move to Birmingham because of the club’s ambition and the opportunity it offered for regular playing time.
He revealed that although other teams showed interest, Birmingham City’s project convinced him to make the switch. The midfielder admitted that while he had been part of the squad at Girona, he often struggled to secure a consistent starting role.
As a young player still developing, he felt gaining minutes on the pitch was crucial. Solís also described the Championship as a highly competitive league and believes the experience in England is an important step in his growth as a player.
Chris Davies’ role in his improvement
Before leaving Girona, Solís had played 531 minutes across 14 appearances under manager Míchel during the first half of the season. Since joining Birmingham City, however, his role has grown significantly.
He noted that working under manager Chris Davies has given him more freedom in midfield. Solís explained that earlier in his career at Atlético Nacional he operated as a box-to-box midfielder, capable of contributing both defensively and offensively.
At Birmingham, that same style has been encouraged. He highlighted his ability to win duels, cover ground defensively, and drive forward with the ball—especially late in matches when spaces begin to open up.
Future remains uncertain
While Solís praised Birmingham City and acknowledged that staying longer could be an option, he has not ruled out other possibilities. His comments suggest he is keeping his options open in case the club decides not to activate the purchase clause or if other opportunities arise in the summer.
With Birmingham City currently sitting mid-table in the Championship, promotion appears unlikely this season. Strong performances in the coming months could therefore be important for Solís as he looks to attract interest from other clubs.
The midfielder is represented by the Jose Levis agency, a group known for managing several Colombian players.
