Coventry City have made significant progress in their quest to return to the top tier of English football, edging closer to ending a 24-year absence from the Premier League.

A commanding 3–1 victory over promotion rivals Middlesbrough marked a turning point for Frank Lampard’s side, who had previously endured a frustrating spell of inconsistency. Prior to that crucial win, the Sky Blues had managed just two victories in eight matches. The triumph at the CBS Arena not only halted their slump but also ignited a four-game winning streak that revitalized their automatic promotion hopes.

Heading into that fixture, Middlesbrough — managed by Kim Hellberg — had narrowed the gap and briefly overtaken Coventry in the standings. However, a stunning hat-trick from Haji Wright decisively swung momentum back in Coventry’s favour. Subsequent wins over West Bromwich Albion, Sheffield United and Stoke City further strengthened their position.

Those victories have created a nine-point buffer over third-placed Millwall, leaving Coventry in a commanding spot as they aim to secure automatic promotion rather than risk the uncertainty of the play-offs.

Jack Rudoni’s £5m arrival now central to promotion ambitions

When Jack Rudoni joined Coventry during the 2024 summer transfer window from Huddersfield Town — following Huddersfield’s relegation to League One — the reported £5 million fee was viewed as a calculated gamble. In his debut season, Rudoni quickly demonstrated his value, playing a vital creative role in guiding the team to a play-off spot. Despite his efforts, Coventry narrowly missed out on promotion after a 3–2 aggregate defeat to Sunderland in the semi-finals.

Expectations were high entering his second campaign. Many believed he would elevate his performances further and become instrumental in an automatic promotion push. However, his season began unevenly. Between August and February, Rudoni endured a 19-game goal drought and registered only four assists, leading some to question whether he could deliver when it mattered most.

That narrative has since shifted dramatically.

The assist he provided for Wright’s opening goal against Middlesbrough appears to have reignited his confidence. Since then, the 24-year-old has scored in consecutive victories over West Brom, Sheffield United and Stoke City — directly influencing Coventry’s resurgence at a critical juncture in the season.

The numbers behind his resurgence

Prior to the Middlesbrough clash, Rudoni had contributed two goals and four assists. That tally has since climbed to five goals and five assists, underlining his upturn in form.

A closer examination of performance data highlights the improvement even more clearly. In the recent run of matches against Stoke, Sheffield United, West Brom and Middlesbrough, Rudoni has averaged:

1.0 shots on target per game (up from a seasonal average of 0.64 per 90 minutes)

1.5 chances created per game (above his 1.44 seasonal average)

2.5 strong attacking contributions per match, compared to 2.08 per 90 previously

His expected assists (xA) figures also show an upward trend. Across his first 21 appearances, he recorded an xA of 2.78. In just the last four fixtures, he has added 0.76 — roughly 20 percent of that total in a very short span. If this creative output continues, further goals and assists should follow naturally.

A £5m deal that could unlock £120m

Should Coventry maintain their current trajectory and secure promotion, Rudoni’s signing may go down as one of the smartest £5 million investments in the club’s history.

Promotion to the Premier League is estimated to be worth up to £120 million in revenue through broadcasting rights, sponsorship, and commercial growth. Furthermore, every additional season spent in the top flight could generate a similar financial return, dramatically transforming the club’s long-term outlook.

Rudoni was already productive last season, contributing nine goals and 12 assists in regular league play. But rediscovering his best form under peak pressure this year may ultimately define Coventry’s campaign.

His thunderous long-range strike against West Brom — a powerful effort rifled into the top corner — perfectly encapsulated the technical quality and attacking threat he brings. Earlier injury struggles may have hampered him during the team’s dip in form, but he now appears revitalized.

If he sustains this level through the season’s climax, Jack Rudoni’s impact could be the decisive factor that separates Lampard’s side from the chasing pack — and turns a £5 million signing into a £120 million reward.
