Daniel Farke Breaks Silence on Aaronson Draft Excluder ‘Mistake’ in Bournemouth Opener…….
Leeds United boss Daniel Farke has admitted that using Brenden Aaronson as a draft excluder during the opening-day clash with Bournemouth was a mistake, after images of the American lying behind the defensive wall sparked criticism from pundits and supporters.
The unusual tactic, often deployed to block low free-kicks, raised eyebrows when Aaronson was seen stretched out behind Leeds’ wall in the first half. Many questioned the decision to use a creative attacking midfielder in that role, with some suggesting it undermined his influence further up the pitch.
Speaking for the first time about the incident, Farke accepted responsibility and admitted it was not the best call. “It was my decision, and in hindsight it was not the right one,” he said. “We wanted to ensure we covered every possible option from the free-kick, but Brenden is not the player who should be doing that job. It’s on me, not on him.”
The manager was quick to defend Aaronson, stressing that the U.S. international remains an important part of his plans. “Brenden gives us creativity, energy, and pressing quality. He has been excellent in training and will continue to play a big role. Players sometimes find themselves in positions they shouldn’t be, and as a coach you have to hold your hands up.”
Farke’s candid admission may go some way to easing supporter frustrations, particularly after Leeds were left to rue missed chances in the 2-2 draw. The German added that lessons have been learned and that such tactical missteps will not be repeated.
Leeds travel to Tottenham next, where Farke will hope Aaronson can make headlines for his attacking contributions rather than a defensive mishap.
