Coventry City have established themselves as one of the standout sides in the Championship this season. After suffering a brief dip in form during the festive period, the Sky Blues have quickly rediscovered their rhythm over the past week and remain firmly in the promotion conversation.

At the heart of that success is Frank Lampard. The former Chelsea and England midfielder, who has reportedly attracted interest from Premier League side Crystal Palace, has overseen an impressive campaign at the CBS Arena. With Coventry pushing towards the top end of the table, Lampard is edging closer to a potential return to the Premier League as a manager, which would represent the first promotion of his coaching career.

Despite the strong position Coventry find themselves in, the final stages of the January transfer window are approaching, and key decisions still need to be made regarding both incoming and outgoing players. With less than a fortnight remaining before the February 2 deadline, there will be a natural temptation for players to remain part of what could be a title-winning squad. However, individual circumstances may lead some to consider moves away in search of greater opportunities.

With that in mind, Football League World has identified two Coventry City players who may be assessing their options as the transfer window draws to a close.

Ben Wilson

Ben Wilson has seen his role at Coventry gradually diminish over the past couple of seasons. While he remains an experienced and respected figure within the squad, opportunities on the pitch have been increasingly limited. The strong form of Carl Rushworth has meant Wilson has not featured in the Championship at all during the current campaign.

The goalkeeper managed just four league appearances during the 2024/25 season, and with Oliver Dovin edging closer to full fitness following an ACL injury last year, competition for places is only set to intensify. As the Swedish international works his way back into Lampard’s plans, Wilson’s position in the pecking order could come under further threat.

If regular first-team football is a priority for Wilson in the second half of the season, a move away from Coventry could become an attractive option. That said, he has been an important servant to the Sky Blues over a number of years, and the chance to play a role—on or off the pitch—in a potential promotion-winning campaign may yet persuade him to stay put.

Kai Andrews

Teenage midfielder Kai Andrews has enjoyed a breakthrough season at Coventry, living out a dream scenario by being trusted by Lampard in the Championship. The 19-year-old has already made seven league appearances as Coventry continue their push towards the Premier League.

However, this stage of Andrews’ development is crucial. As a young player, consistent minutes are vital if he is to continue progressing and adapting to the demands of senior football. With Coventry boasting strong options in midfield and the pressure intensifying as the promotion race heats up, regular game time at the CBS Arena may be difficult to come by in the coming months.

As a result, a loan move during the second half of the season could prove beneficial for all parties. Such a move would allow Andrews to gain valuable experience, develop his game, and return better prepared to challenge for a place in Lampard’s plans in the future.

Already capped once at senior level by Wales, Andrews spent a brief loan spell at Motherwell during the 2024/25 season. Coventry could now look to further test his abilities with another temporary move, potentially in League One, as transfer activity across the EFL begins to gather momentum.
