Newcastle United head coach has expressed deep frustration at how national team managers handle his players during international breaks, particularly in what he describes as “meaningless friendlies.” The Magpies boss voiced concern after several of his key men returned from international duty fatigued and, in some cases, injured — a pattern he believes is unfair to both the players and their clubs.
“International football is important, but there has to be balance,” he said. “When players are overused in friendlies or played out of position, it affects their performance and recovery when they come back to their clubs.”
Newcastle, battling through a demanding Premier League and European schedule, have been hit hard by player absences this season. The coach stressed that while he respects national pride and duty, managers must act with greater responsibility.
“This isn’t about stopping players from representing their countries,” he added, “but about protecting them from unnecessary risks.”
