In his latest press conference ahead of Arsenal’s Premier League clash with Leeds United, Mikel Arteta addressed a range of topics, including team news, transfer speculation, and player fitness.
Arteta began by praising newly-promoted Leeds United and manager Daniel Farke, highlighting their energy and tactical discipline. He stressed the need for Arsenal to be at their best to secure a result, acknowledging the difficulty of facing a side eager to prove themselves.
On the transfer front, Arteta was asked about links to Crystal Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze. While he declined to comment directly on the player, he emphasized the importance of emotional connection and character in potential signings. “That’s the number one — that they want to be with us and feel something special,” he said. Arteta added that the club’s activity in the market was not reactive to injuries, but part of a well-planned strategy.
Regarding Kai Havertz, Arteta confirmed the German international has suffered an injury and would miss the upcoming match. “We don’t really know the extent of it. We need more time and some tests,” he explained. He remained hopeful but admitted uncertainty about Havertz’s return timeline, saying, “I would love to have him available for tomorrow.”
Defensive duo Jurrien Timber and Ben White are also being assessed. Timber, who is recovering from a long-term injury, is being closely managed to avoid setbacks. “We have to manage his load,” Arteta said. Ben White’s availability remains uncertain, while midfielder Christian Nørgaard has been ruled out.
On Gabriel Jesus, Arteta was optimistic. “He’s doing super well. He looks in a really good place,” he said, though he acknowledged the seriousness of Jesus’s previous injury and the need for a cautious approach.
New signing Viktor Gyökeres was also discussed. Arteta indicated the striker is gaining sharpness and could feature more. “He is very enthusiastic. He has trained really well this week again,” Arteta noted.
Finally, Arteta spoke positively about working with Arsenal’s new sporting director Andrea Berta. “He brings something different… very professional, thorough, determined,” he said, describing their early collaboration as enjoyable and productive.
Overall, Arteta struck a calm and focused tone, reinforcing the club’s long-term vision while navigating short-term challenges ahead of a key fixture.
