Jacob Brown’s time at Luton Town has proven challenging since his move from Stoke City ahead of the Hatters’ historic Premier League campaign in 2024. The forward has managed just seven goals in 60 appearances during his spell in Bedfordshire and is now keen to move on from what has been a frustrating chapter in his career.
The 27-year-old missed the opening part of the current season due to a knee injury and, despite return to full fitness in November, has found it difficult to force his way back into the first-team picture at Kenilworth Road.
Portsmouth, meanwhile, are looking to strengthen their attacking options as they battle to steer clear of the Championship relegation zone. Football League World understands that Pompey are currently at the front of the queue to secure Brown’s signature before tonight’s 7pm deadline.
Earlier reports had suggested that Barnsley were in talks over a move for the former Tykes forward, but Portsmouth now appear poised to complete the deal, offering Brown a fresh opportunity in the Championship. Talks between the South Coast club and the player are said to be at an advanced stage, with the move expected to bring Brown’s difficult stint at Luton to a close.
Injuries and limited game time have played a major role in Luton boss Jack Wilshere’s willingness to let the striker depart. Brown will be hoping a switch to Fratton Park allows him to play a part in Portsmouth’s bid to remain in the second tier for a second consecutive season.
While there may be concerns about his immediate match sharpness due to a lack of recent minutes, Brown has previously shown his quality at Championship level, most notably scoring 13 goals for Stoke City during the 2021/22 season. His arrival would also ease the burden on Colby Bishop, as fixtures continue to come thick and fast for Portsmouth.
