Defender Alex Mitchell has revealed that he would seriously consider making his loan move to Plymouth Argyle permanent when the current season comes to an end. The 24-year-old centre-back has enjoyed a productive spell with the club and admitted that he has grown fond of life at Home Park since arriving last summer.

Mitchell joined Argyle on loan from Charlton Athletic in mid-August and has quickly established himself as one of the most reliable figures in the team’s defence. Since arriving, he has become a regular starter, featuring in 28 of the club’s 34 league matches so far this season. His tally of appearances is the second highest among Argyle players in the league campaign, highlighting just how important he has been to the side.

In total, the defender has made 35 appearances in all competitions for Plymouth, demonstrating both his consistency and the trust placed in him by the coaching staff. His performances have helped stabilize the back line during a season that has seen several defensive partners struggle with injuries.

Despite his positive experience at Argyle, Mitchell remains under contract with Charlton Athletic. The centre-back still has one year remaining on the three-year deal he signed with the Addicks after completing a move from Millwall in the summer of 2024. During his first season with Charlton, Mitchell featured 34 times across all competitions and played his part as the club secured promotion through the League One play-offs.

However, after helping Charlton reach the Championship, he found first-team opportunities limited and did not make an appearance in the second tier before sealing his temporary switch to Plymouth.

Speaking ahead of Plymouth’s League One clash with Doncaster Rovers, Mitchell admitted that he has thoroughly enjoyed his time at the club and is open to the idea of staying longer if the opportunity arises.

He explained that Plymouth has been a place where he genuinely enjoys coming in to work every day, describing the environment at the club as positive and motivating. While acknowledging that the future is not entirely within his control, Mitchell said he remains focused on performing well and letting circumstances unfold naturally.

The defender also highlighted some of the personal challenges that come with playing away from home. Living far from his family has not always been easy, and he admitted that he doesn’t get to see them as often as he would like. Nevertheless, he recognized that such sacrifices are common for professional footballers and part of the demands of the sport.

Mitchell emphasized that any decision about his future ultimately rests with Charlton Athletic, who still hold his contract. However, he made it clear that if the club decided to allow him to leave permanently, a move to Plymouth would be something he would strongly consider.

On the pitch, Mitchell has become a key figure in Argyle’s defensive setup. He has been a consistent presence at the heart of the back line while several of his defensive teammates have struggled with injuries throughout the season. Players such as Julio Pleguezuelo, Brendan Galloway, and Mathias Ross have all spent time on the sidelines, making Mitchell’s availability even more valuable.

The defender credits head coach Tom Cleverley for helping him develop his game during his time at the club. Mitchell said that playing regularly has given him a sense of responsibility to maintain high standards within the squad and contribute to the team’s overall performance.

According to Mitchell, Cleverley has worked closely with him on improving his defensive positioning and understanding of the game when his team is out of possession. At the same time, the player believes he has also grown technically during his time at Plymouth, particularly with the ball at his feet.

One notable change has been his adaptation to playing on the left side of central defence. Mitchell admitted that just a couple of years ago, during spells in Scotland or at Lincoln, the idea of playing on that side would have made him nervous. Now, however, he feels far more comfortable in the role and has even operated on the left side of a back three in several matches this season.

He also praised Cleverley’s honest approach to management. Mitchell recalled a moment earlier in the season when he was left out of the squad for a game against Huddersfield Town, acknowledging that he knew his performances had not been up to the required level at the time. Rather than feeling frustrated, he appreciated the straightforward feedback and used it as motivation to improve.

For Mitchell, that level of honesty and trust from the coaching staff has helped build his confidence and contributed to his steady progress during the campaign.

As the season moves toward its conclusion, the defender’s future remains uncertain. But with consistent performances and a strong connection to the club, the possibility of Alex Mitchell continuing his journey with Plymouth Argyle on a permanent basis remains firmly on the table.
