Hull raced into an early lead when a corner resulted in an own goal by Callum Elder after just nine minutes. Derby responded through Craig Forsyth, who tapped home after his side capitalised on a rebound. But Oli McBurnie restored Hull’s advantage just before half‑time, and Sammie Szmodics quickly levelled once more to make it 2–2 at the break.
The second half belonged to the hosts. John Egan headed Hull back in front in the 75th minute before Lewis Koumas sealed the victory with a stylish strike in the 84th minute, condemning Derby to back‑to‑back defeats.
Derby manager John Eustace acknowledged his side’s effort but lamented defensive lapses that proved costly. He noted that his team created a number of good chances and “on another night we could have scored five or six,” but admitted the concession of four goals was the difference.
