Former Sheffield Wednesday loanee Harry Amass has been dealt a devastating setback shortly after completing his move to Norwich City, with the young defender now facing a potentially long spell out of action due to injury.

The 18-year-old suffered the injury during a training session ahead of Norwich’s Championship trip to Middlesbrough on Saturday, just days after arriving on loan from Manchester United for the remainder of the season. The issue, described as serious by head coach Philippe Clement, ruled Amass out of the matchday squad entirely and has raised concerns about how long he could be sidelined.

Amass only joined the Canaries a little over a week ago, following an impressive first half of the campaign at Sheffield Wednesday, where he caught the eye during his loan spell at Hillsborough. His time with the Owls officially came to an end after their 3-0 defeat to QPR at Loftus Road on January 4, and Wednesday were keen to secure his return for the second half of the season. However, they were unable to reach an agreement with Manchester United, opening the door for Norwich to step in.

The move to Carrow Road was seen as a chance for Amass to continue his development in a more competitive side, and he made his Norwich debut from the bench in last Monday’s 2-1 home victory over Coventry City. With that appearance under his belt, the teenager was expected to push strongly for a starting role against Middlesbrough at the Riverside. Instead, a late injury blow in training brought his momentum to a sudden halt.

Speaking to BBC Radio Norfolk, Clement revealed the injury occurred at the very end of a session and said the club initially held back from commenting until further assessments were carried out. While full details have yet to be confirmed, the Norwich boss admitted early signs suggest Amass could be facing a prolonged absence. He also stressed the importance of first discussing the situation with Manchester United, given the player’s loan status, before making further public statements.

Norwich went on to lose 1-0 to Middlesbrough, but Clement confirmed the club has no plans to bring in another left-back as cover. He explained that the current squad already includes four players capable of filling the role, making additional recruitment unnecessary.

Despite the unfortunate timing of the injury, Amass’s loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday highlighted his promise. During his time with the Owls, he made 21 appearances, scoring once and providing one assist, performances that underlined why both Wednesday and Norwich were eager to secure his services.
