Holbrook Confirmed as Knights Coach for 2026, Eyes Revival After Wooden Spoon Season…….
Newcastle, NSW – In a long–anticipated move, Justin Holbrook has been appointed as the head coach of the Newcastle Knights, set to take charge in the 2026 NRL season. The club confirmed the decision following a meeting of the board earlier this week.
Holbrook, a former Knight himself, replaces Adam O’Brien, who will depart at the end of the 2025 season. The club says Holbrook has signed a three-year deal to lead what has been a turbulent period for the Knights.
A Homecoming of Sorts
Holbrook played for Newcastle early in his playing career and has spoken publicly of his desire to return to the club. The connection to the club and its community was a major factor in his selection. Newcastle’s board, according to insiders, felt that Holbrook’s local ties, combined with his previous head-coaching experience, made him the best candidate to rebuild the club.
The Challenge Ahead
The 2025 season was one to forget for the Knights. The club finished last on the ladder (earning the “wooden spoon”) and posted poor attacking statistics, struggling defensively as the year wore on. Holbrook’s remit is clear: lift performance, reshape the squad, and restore competitiveness.
One of Holbrook’s early priorities will be working with marquee recruit Dylan Brown, who arrives at Newcastle in 2026. Holbrook has also singled out Kalyn Ponga and other spine players—including Fletcher Sharpe and Sandon Smith—as key pieces in the Knights’ plans.
