Hull KR Boss Willie Peters Explains Why He Ruled Himself Out of Newcastle Knights Job just
Hull KR head coach Willie Peters has confirmed he will not be a candidate for the vacant Newcastle Knights job, despite being linked with a return to his homeland. The 45-year-old Australian, who has enjoyed impressive success with Rovers in Super League, revealed he is fully committed to the long-term project in East Hull and has no plans to walk away.
Speculation had mounted after the Knights announced that their head coach would be leaving at the end of the NRL season, sparking rumours of Peters being considered as a replacement. Peters, who previously served as an assistant coach at Newcastle earlier in his career, was seen as a natural contender. However, speaking this week, he dismissed any suggestion of a switch.
“I’ve got a big job here at Hull KR and I’ve never been more focused,” Peters said. “I’ve been linked with the Knights because of my history there, but for me, it’s about finishing what we’ve started here. We’ve built strong foundations, we’ve got great players, and I believe we can achieve something special.”
Peters has guided Hull KR into play-off contention and to a Challenge Cup Final since taking charge in 2023. His coaching style and ability to get the best out of young talent have earned plaudits both in England and Australia. Yet, he insists his loyalty lies with the club that gave him his first head coaching opportunity.
“I owe a lot to Hull KR,” he added. “When I came here, they put their faith in me and my vision. I wouldn’t walk away from that just because an opportunity opens up elsewhere. Newcastle is a club close to my heart, but the timing isn’t right, and my responsibility is here.”
The Knights, meanwhile, continue their search for a new head coach amid reports of interest from several experienced NRL figures. Peters’ decision to publicly rule himself out will bring clarity to both sets of fans, particularly Rovers supporters who had grown concerned about losing their coach.
For now, Peters’ focus remains on pushing Hull KR toward silverware and further strengthening their squad for 2026 and beyond. His message was clear: his future lies in East Yorkshire, not back in Newcastle.
