Coventry City captain Matt Grimes has issued a heartfelt apology to supporters following the club’s recent dip in form, admitting the squad has fallen short of the standards expected this season.
Speaking after another frustrating result, Grimes didn’t hide from responsibility. Instead, he faced the situation head-on, describing the team’s struggles as a result of “player unreadiness” in key moments. According to the skipper, it’s not about effort — but about sharpness, focus, and being mentally prepared when it matters most.
“We haven’t been at the level this club deserves,” Grimes said. “The fans travel everywhere for us, they back us through everything, and lately we haven’t given them performances to be proud of. That’s on us as players.”
Coventry started the campaign with high hopes, but inconsistent displays have seen momentum slip away. Grimes believes small lapses — slow starts, missed chances, and defensive hesitation — have cost the team valuable points.
However, the captain also struck a determined tone. Inside the dressing room, he says the mood is honest but motivated. Training intensity has risen, conversations have been direct, and leaders within the squad are demanding more from one another.
“This isn’t about blame,” Grimes added. “It’s about reacting the right way. We owe the fans a response — and they’ll see one.”
