Southampton Midfielder Caspar Jander Reportedly Keen on Summer Exit — Saints May Already Have His Successor
midfielder Caspar Jander is reportedly considering leaving the club during the upcoming summer transfer window, according to reports from German outlet BILD. The 22-year-old German has struggled to fully settle in England and could be open to a move away from St Mary’s after just one season with the Championship side.
Jander initially enjoyed a promising start to life at Southampton after joining the club in the summer of 2025. The young midfielder quickly earned regular minutes and became part of the starting lineup for a large portion of the campaign. However, his position in the team has recently come under threat.
A disappointing first-half display against Leicester City, which saw him substituted early, combined with the return of Shea Charles from injury, has seen Jander fall down the pecking order in Southampton’s midfield. As a result, speculation about his future has begun to gather momentum once again.
Interest from European clubs
Despite being under contract with Southampton until 2028, several clubs across Europe are already monitoring the situation closely. Reports suggest that German sides RB Leipzig and VfB Stuttgart are both interested in the midfielder, while Dutch giants Ajax are also said to be keeping tabs on him.
However, according to BILD, the strongest factor pushing toward a potential exit could be personal rather than football-related. The report claims Jander is currently unhappy with aspects of his life in England and would prefer to move closer to his family and girlfriend in Germany. Because of this, a return to his home country is viewed as the most likely outcome should he decide to leave Southampton.
His former club FC Nürnberg also have a financial interest in any potential transfer. The German side negotiated a 10 percent sell-on clause when Southampton signed Jander, meaning they would receive a portion of the transfer fee if he is sold.
Reasons behind the possible departure
Two main reasons have reportedly been cited for Jander’s desire to move on. The first relates to Southampton’s promotion hopes. According to BILD, the midfielder believes a return to the Premier League may be unlikely this season due to the club’s current points deficit.
However, this claim appears somewhat questionable given Southampton are still only a few points away from the Championship play-off positions, meaning their promotion chances remain very much alive.
The second and more significant reason appears to be his personal circumstances, with the midfielder reportedly finding it difficult to adapt to life away from home.
Even so, reports linking Jander with a move away have surfaced several times in recent months, suggesting his representatives could already be working behind the scenes to explore potential options for the upcoming transfer window.
Southampton’s potential asking price
If Southampton were to consider selling Jander, they would likely demand a substantial transfer fee. According to Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg, the club currently values the midfielder between €15 million and €25 million (£13 million to £21 million).
Considering Southampton paid approximately £10 million to sign him in 2025, the club would hope to generate a healthy profit on their investment. With Nürnberg entitled to 10 percent of the transfer proceeds, Southampton would be keen to secure the highest possible fee if a sale becomes unavoidable.
Despite the recent uncertainty surrounding his future, Jander has still played an important role this season. He has started 26 matches in the Championship, scoring two goals and demonstrating impressive passing ability. His passing accuracy stands at around 90 percent, and he has completed nearly 1,000 passes, highlighting his influence in possession.
Because of those numbers, Southampton would ideally prefer to keep the talented midfielder at the club rather than lose him after only one year.
Cam Bragg could step up
However, if Jander does leave during the summer, Southampton may already have a natural replacement within their ranks.
Young academy midfielder Cam Bragg has recently caught the attention of supporters and coaching staff alike. The 20-year-old, who captained the club’s Under-21 side earlier this season under Tonda Eckert, has impressed since being promoted to the first-team squad.
Although still very young, Bragg has displayed maturity beyond his years in the limited opportunities he has been given. In his 12 appearances this season, the midfielder has shown composure on the ball, tactical intelligence, and a balanced all-round playing style.
If Southampton ultimately decide to sell Jander for a significant fee, the club could allow Bragg to continue developing as a first-team player while reinvesting the transfer money into strengthening other areas of the squad.
In that scenario, Jander’s potential departure may not necessarily weaken the team. Instead, it could provide Southampton with the opportunity to promote another promising talent from their academy system.
And if Bragg continues to progress as he has so far, the Saints might already have the perfect successor waiting in the wings.
