In a statement that’s already drawing eyebrows across European football circles, FC Porto president André Villas-Boas has publicly criticized the current transfer market — and not in subtle terms. He claimed it is “alarming” that Porto now find themselves competing with clubs such as Sunderland and Burnley for signings, rather than titans like Barcelona or Atlético Madrid.

Villas-Boas argued that spiralling costs have forced Porto into a precarious position, one where they must overhaul finances, sell key assets, and yet still pony up large salaries to remain competitive.  He lamented the structural advantages enjoyed by Premier League clubs, including higher revenue pools and multi-club ownership models that allow tighter flexibility in player movements.
