London and England’s football heritage runs deep, shaped by clubs that helped form the modern game. Among them, Fulham FC proudly stand as London’s oldest professional football club, founded in 1879. Long before the Premier League era, Fulham were already playing on the banks of the Thames, laying foundations for the capital’s football identity.
Even older still are Cray Wanderers, founded in 1860, widely recognised as the oldest football club in London and one of the oldest in the world. Their survival through generations is a remarkable testament to grassroots football.
Beyond London, historic giants emerged across England. Preston North End, founded in 1880, were true pioneers, becoming the first winners of the Football League and FA Cup in the same season. Derby County followed in 1884, while Leicester City were established in 1884 (originally Leicester Fosse).
Millwall FC began life in 1885, forged by dockworkers, building a reputation for grit and loyalty. Arsenal were founded in 1886 as Dial Square, before evolving into one of England’s most decorated clubs. Manchester United began as Newton Heath in 1878, rising from humble railway roots.
Further north-east, Middlesbrough were formed in 1876, while Ipswich Town arrived later in 1878. Tottenham Hotspur, founded in 1882, completed London’s historic core.
Together, these clubs are living monuments to football’s enduring legacy.
