Mind blowing – Sheffield United man sends back few words of message few days after leaving.

Chris Wilder believes Sheffield United have enjoyed an extremely positive few days, highlighted by the arrival of Kalvin Phillips and an important home victory. The Blades capped off a productive period by beating Championship strugglers Oxford United 3–1 at Bramall Lane, shortly after securing deadline-day signings Phillips, Joe Rothwell and Leo Hjelde.

Phillips, the former England international, has joined Sheffield United on loan from Manchester City until the end of the season as he looks to reignite a career that has stalled since his high-profile £45 million move from Leeds United in 2022. Since arriving at City, Phillips has struggled to establish himself under Pep Guardiola and has been unable to regain consistent form during loan spells at West Ham United and Ipswich Town over the past two campaigns. This latest move represents another opportunity for the midfielder to rebuild his confidence and rediscover his best level.

Wilder expressed satisfaction with both the club’s transfer business and Phillips’ early impact, describing the period as a “good 48 to 72 hours” for Sheffield United. He praised the professionalism and mindset of the new arrivals, stressing that Phillips requires no special treatment given his experience and achievements in the game. Wilder noted that the midfielder appears physically fit and simply needs regular match action to find his rhythm, suggesting that a handful of games should be enough to get him firing again.

The Sheffield United manager also highlighted Phillips’ attitude, revealing that he has already impressed staff and teammates despite only being at the club for a day. Similar praise was reserved for Rothwell, with Wilder underlining how significant it was that both players were keen to join the club and eager to contribute.

On the pitch, Sheffield United showed resilience to recover from an early setback against Oxford. The visitors went ahead through Myles Peart-Harris, but the Blades responded well, with Sydie Peck scoring an equaliser before half-time. Sheffield United took control after the break, and second-half goals from Andre Brooks and Chiedozie Ogbene sealed another strong home performance. The result marked their sixth win in seven home league matches and moved them to within eight points of the Championship’s top six with 16 games remaining.

Wilder stressed the importance of securing wins in matches like this, explaining that high-profile fixtures against teams such as Leicester City, Middlesbrough and Coventry City often take care of themselves due to the atmosphere and expectations. He emphasised that games against struggling sides are just as crucial, and praised his team for getting the job done.

For Oxford United, the defeat leaves them second from bottom in the table, five points away from safety, and represents their second loss in five matches under new manager Matt Bloomfield. Despite the result, Bloomfield remained philosophical, pointing out that his side had conceded very few shots on target yet had been punished severely. He acknowledged the harsh margins his team is currently facing but insisted they must stay committed to their approach and continue pushing forward as they battle to escape relegation trouble.
