How Much Jesse Lingard Earned in South Korea as Coventry City Are Backed to Consider a Premier League Move
Although the Championship transfer window officially closed on February 2, speculation surrounding potential moves has continued to swirl across the division. The closure of the window has not completely halted recruitment activity, as clubs are still permitted to sign free agents at any point during the season. With the free-agent market remaining open, all 24 Championship sides retain the flexibility to strengthen their squads should the right opportunity arise.
With less than a third of the campaign remaining, the pressure is intensifying in the race for promotion to the Premier League. The battle is fierce, whether through the automatic promotion spots or via the play-offs, and every point now carries enormous weight.
At present, Coventry City have reasserted themselves at the summit of the table following a brief dip in form around the New Year. The Sky Blues have bounced back impressively, delivering three significant victories in succession. These included a crucial win over promotion rivals Middlesbrough, as well as impressive away triumphs against West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield United. Those results have strengthened belief that Coventry could soon return to the top tier of English football.
It has now been 25 years since Coventry last competed in the Premier League. Their relegation at the end of the dramatic 2000/01 season ended a remarkable 34-year stay in the top flight. Under Frank Lampard, the club appears closer than ever to ending that long absence. The team has combined defensive solidity with attacking creativity, and several members of the current squad will be dreaming of testing themselves at the highest level if promotion is secured.
However, achieving success in the Premier League typically requires additional depth, quality, and experience. One player who could potentially provide those attributes is Jesse Lingard.
Lingard’s Situation After Leaving South Korea
The former Manchester United academy graduate and 32-cap England international became a free agent after leaving South Korean side FC Seoul in December. Since then, his name has surfaced in various transfer discussions.
Reports have suggested that Coventry City, Middlesbrough, and Ipswich Town were among several clubs that declined the opportunity to sign him on a free transfer. More recently, he has also been linked with a possible move to Brazilian club Remo as he searches for the next chapter in his career.
Despite the apparent lack of immediate interest, some supporters believe Lingard could still be a worthwhile option — under the right conditions.
How Much Did Lingard Earn at FC Seoul?
Football League World spoke to Coventry fan pundit Chris Deez, who argued that a move for Lingard would only make sense if Coventry achieve promotion to the Premier League, largely because of financial considerations.
Deez pointed out that Lingard’s reputation has shifted in recent years. While he has faced criticism and mockery — particularly over his social media presence — he previously demonstrated genuine quality at Manchester United and enjoyed a standout spell at West Ham United. That suggests there is still a capable player there, provided he remains focused and motivated.
However, wages represent a major obstacle. Deez explained that Coventry’s current wage structure would likely prevent a deal from happening in the Championship. He believes Lingard would not accept a weekly salary in the region of £25,000 to £30,000, which is reportedly close to the club’s upper wage limit under owner Doug King. This financial reality is partly why Coventry previously secured players like Frank Onyeka on loan rather than committing to permanent high-salary deals.
If promotion were achieved, though, the situation could change dramatically. The increased revenue from Premier League participation would expand the club’s wage budget, potentially making it feasible to attract higher-profile players like Lingard.
Interestingly, Lingard’s earnings have varied significantly in recent years. During a short spell at Nottingham Forest in the 2022/23 season, he reportedly earned around £180,000 per week. However, he is said to have taken a substantial pay cut to join FC Seoul, where his weekly wage was approximately £17,500.
While in South Korea, Lingard registered 19 goals and 10 assists across 67 appearances — a respectable return that indicates he can still contribute effectively at senior level.
Would Lingard Fit into Coventry’s Current Team?
Even if Coventry were promoted and able to afford him, there is no guarantee Lingard would automatically secure a starting place.
Jack Rudoni has been one of the standout performers since Frank Lampard’s appointment in November 2024. The attacking midfielder has flourished under the former Chelsea boss, and his recent goals against West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield United could prove decisive in Coventry’s push for promotion. Displacing Rudoni from the starting lineup would be no easy task.
Moreover, promotion to the Premier League would open the door to other attacking reinforcements who may previously have been financially out of reach. Coventry’s recruitment strategy might focus on younger or longer-term investments rather than a short-term addition.
Ultimately, while Lingard’s experience at Premier League and international level could prove valuable, any potential move would likely depend on two key factors: Coventry securing promotion and Lingard accepting terms that align with the club’s financial structure.
For now, his future remains uncertain — but his name continues to generate debate among Championship supporters as the promotion race reaches its climax.
