Newcastle Knights Unveil Dates For State-of-the-Art, $5.3B Renovation to the McDonald Jone’s Stadium, Redefining a New Era with a Cut Edge Technology, Luxury Suites and Expanded Seating for a World Class Fan Experience
The Newcastle Knights have officially announced the launch dates for the highly anticipated $5.3 billion renovation of McDonald Jones Stadium, marking a transformative moment in Australian sports infrastructure. The ambitious redevelopment project aims to redefine the fan experience with cutting-edge technology, expanded seating capacity, and a host of premium amenities designed to make the stadium one of the most advanced in the Southern Hemisphere.
Scheduled to begin construction in early 2026, the project is expected to be completed by late 2028, with phased upgrades allowing the Knights to continue playing home games during the renovation. The revamped stadium will feature state-of-the-art digital systems, including immersive fan engagement zones, AI-powered crowd management, and advanced sustainability measures such as solar roofing and water recycling.
A highlight of the redesign will be the introduction of over 120 new luxury suites and lounges, providing spectators with unparalleled comfort and hospitality. Seating will also expand to accommodate more than 45,000 fans, ensuring a larger and more dynamic match-day atmosphere for both NRL and international events.
Knights CEO Phil Gardner hailed the renovation as a “historic milestone” that reflects the club’s commitment to innovation and community. “This project will not only enhance the game-day experience but also strengthen Newcastle’s reputation as a premier sporting destination,” Gardner stated.
Local businesses and tourism are also expected to benefit significantly, with projections of thousands of jobs created during construction and increased visitor numbers once the stadium reopens.
As anticipation builds, the Newcastle Knights’ vision for McDonald Jones Stadium stands as a bold statement — a fusion of tradition, technology, and world-class design ready to elevate Australian rugby league into a new era.
