Exclusive: Sheffield Wednesday turn down Portsmouth approach for Svante Ingelsson
Sheffield Wednesday have reportedly rejected an offer from fellow Championship side Portsmouth for midfielder Svante Ingelsson, according to information understood by The Star.
The financially troubled Owls are currently under administration and are actively exploring player sales as they look to generate much-needed funds before the January transfer window closes. Several first-team players are attracting attention from clubs across the Football League, with young prospect Yisa Alao close to sealing a move to Chelsea, while club captain Barry Bannan has already bid farewell to teammates as he prepares for an anticipated switch to Millwall.
Sources close to the situation have revealed that Portsmouth recently submitted a bid for Swedish midfielder Ingelsson, but that offer was swiftly rejected by Sheffield Wednesday. Pompey, who are battling to avoid relegation from the Championship and operating within tight financial constraints, have struggled for consistency in midfield this season, prompting their interest in the 26-year-old.
Although Ingelsson’s current contract is due to expire at the end of the season, it is understood that Sheffield Wednesday hold an option to extend the deal by a further year. This clause would effectively keep him tied to the club until the summer of 2027, strengthening Wednesday’s position in any potential negotiations.
Ingelsson joined the Owls on a free transfer from German side Hansa Rostock in the summer of 2024 and has since become a popular and influential presence at Hillsborough. As one of the more experienced members of the squad, his leadership has stood out during a turbulent campaign.
With administrators keen to raise funds to protect against a prolonged insolvency process—and with relegation to League One appearing increasingly inevitable—the likelihood of Ingelsson departing has grown.
