One of Pompey’s standout players this season has pointed to the strong bond between himself and his defensive partner as a major reason behind their recent success at the heart of defence.
Regan Poole believes the understanding he has built with Connor Ogilvie over the past six matches has played a crucial role in their performances. With John Mousinho set to welcome defensive reinforcements soon, Poole feels their growing chemistry should not be overlooked.
Pompey were unable to secure a third straight away victory after falling 2–1 to Wrexham at the Racecourse Ground. The Blues struggled in the opening half but showed greater determination after the interval.
Poole praised his partnership with Ogilvie, describing both their on-field communication and off-field friendship as key strengths.
He explained that the first half against Wrexham was among the most challenging periods they have faced together. The pair had to dig deep, compete fiercely in duels, and quickly adjust after their opponents altered their tactical approach.
Despite the setback, Poole insists he is enjoying playing alongside Ogilvie and believes they are performing well as a unit. While acknowledging that the return of Conor Shaughnessy and Hayden Matthews will increase competition for places, he hopes their partnership can continue.
Poole emphasised that their close friendship — sharing a room, spending time together away from football, and constantly talking through matches — has strengthened their understanding on the pitch.
Although the defeat at Wrexham ended Pompey’s run of successive away wins, it has not significantly dented the team’s overall momentum. After a sluggish start, the Blues responded strongly, showing resilience despite fatigue from a demanding schedule.
Reflecting on the performance, Poole admitted the team made life difficult for themselves early on and were caught off guard by Wrexham’s tactical adjustments, which exposed them defensively before they managed to adapt.
