Sheffield Wednesday Confirm Player Departure as Pierce Charles Set for Return Against Derby County
Sheffield Wednesday are preparing for a significant squad change ahead of their upcoming clash with Derby County. Pierce Charles is poised to make his long-awaited return to action for the Owls, while Seny Dieng has officially departed the club.
According to The Star, Charles has reached full fitness and is expected to reclaim his spot between the posts. His return marks a major turning point for the team, as it also signals the conclusion of Dieng’s short-term spell at Hillsborough. The Senegalese goalkeeper initially joined the club on a seven-day emergency loan following an injury to Murphy Cooper. That loan was subsequently extended for a further week to cover for Charles’ ongoing recovery. With Charles now cleared to start at Pride Park this weekend, it has been confirmed that Dieng will be returning to his parent club, Middlesbrough. Head coach Henrik Pedersen commented on the move, stating:
> “He’s leaving the club after tomorrow’s training… So we really hope that Pierce can play on Saturday!”
Charles cleared for action with no health risks
Pedersen also expressed confidence in Charles’ readiness, emphasizing that the 20-year-old goalkeeper has undergone thorough testing and training sessions without issue. The Owls boss reassured fans that Charles is not being rushed back prematurely, saying:
> “He had several really good sessions, and there’s been no pain or problems after all the tests. He even took part in full 11 v 11 training. It’s been a long time since he last played, but there are no health risks, and there’s nothing to suggest he shouldn’t be able to feature in the game at Derby.”
The rest of Sheffield Wednesday’s squad remains largely unchanged, with no new injury concerns reported. Pedersen indicated that a lineup similar to the one that faced Southampton is likely, though there is a chance that Jaden Heskey could return to contention after missing that game due to a minor knock.
