“I Shouldn’t Have Left – Former Stoke City Midfield Favourite Quietly Regrets Exit as Potters Build Without Him”

Just months after his move from Stoke City, midfielder Wouter Burger is reportedly reflecting on his decision — quietly wondering whether leaving the Potters came at the wrong time, as the club begins a new chapter in the 2025/26 season.

Burger’s departure was confirmed in July 2025, when he joined Hoffenheim for an undisclosed fee after two seasons at Stoke City. During his time in the Staffordshire club’s midfield, he made 86 appearances and scored key goals, becoming a fan-favourite for his energy, technical ability, and leadership on the pitch.

The Dutch midfielder had been one of Stoke’s most consistent performers, featuring 45 times for the Potters in the 2024/25 season alone as the club battled to secure Championship survival.

But since his exit, sources close to Burger suggest that while he is proud of the next step in his career, he’s been keeping a close eye on how Stoke are reshaping under manager Mark Robins and starting to show renewed ambition in the league — and the thoughts of “what if” have quietly surfaced.

“Wouter always spoke about how much the fans and club meant to him,” a close friend told The Staffordshire Press. “He left to test himself abroad, to grow his game, and that’s still true. But seeing Stoke commit to a fresh identity, the energy around them… sometimes he finds himself wondering if maybe he shouldn’t have stayed just a bit longer.”

Back in Stoke, supporters still talk fondly of Burger’s passion and commitment — and many admit they hoped he’d remain a long-term midfield anchor. Meanwhile, Stoke have brought in fresh faces and reshaped their squad for the current campaign, forging forward without one of the players who leaves behind some of the fondest memories from recent seasons.

For Burger, his move to Hoffenheim represents a chance to test himself in the German Bundesliga — a major opportunity for growth. Yet even as he embraces that challenge, insiders say there are moments when his thoughts drift back to the Potters faithful at the bet365 Stadium.

For Stoke City, it’s a new era.

For Wouter Burger, it’s a new chapter — but one that still carries a quiet question in the back of his mind.
