Southampton’s hopes of securing an exciting summer signing could depend heavily on what happens to Leeds United at the end of the season. If Leeds manage to maintain their place in the Premier League, it could open the door for Joe Gelhardt to depart Elland Road in search of regular first-team football. Such a scenario would present Southampton with a golden opportunity to bring in a player who perfectly matches their attacking needs.

The Saints are expected to make changes to their forward line when the season concludes. One of the key reasons is the likely departure of Cyle Larin, whose loan spell is set to expire in the summer. If he returns to his parent club, Southampton would lose the only player currently in the squad who can reliably operate as a traditional centre-forward. That situation would leave Ross Stewart as the club’s primary option in that role, making it essential for the Saints to recruit another striker who can provide goals, depth, and healthy competition.

Joe Gelhardt appears to fit that requirement almost perfectly. The young forward has long been regarded as a player with tremendous potential, and despite still being early in his career, he already possesses valuable experience in both the Premier League and the Championship. Currently on loan at Hull City, Gelhardt has enjoyed a productive campaign, contributing 11 goals and four assists in 28 Championship appearances. Those numbers highlight his growing influence and underline why several clubs may be keeping a close eye on his situation.

At just 22 years old, Gelhardt still has plenty of room to develop, making him an attractive long-term investment. His versatility is another major strength. While he is capable of leading the line as a centre-forward, he can also operate in several other attacking roles. Gelhardt is comfortable playing as a number ten behind the striker, drifting into central creative areas, or even moving out to the right side of midfield when required. This flexibility would give Southampton’s coaching staff multiple tactical options and help the team adapt to different opponents.

Leeds United’s final league position could play a crucial role in determining Gelhardt’s future. If they remain in the Premier League, the club may consider selling certain players to balance the squad or generate funds. In those circumstances, Gelhardt could become available on the transfer market. However, Southampton would almost certainly face competition from other clubs that recognize the striker’s talent and potential.

Regardless of whether Southampton achieve promotion this season or remain in the Championship, Gelhardt could still emerge as a priority target. The Championship is widely regarded as one of the toughest leagues in European football due to its physicality and demanding schedule. If Southampton fail to secure promotion, strengthening the squad will become even more important—especially with strong teams potentially dropping down from the Premier League, such as Nottingham Forest or West Ham United, which could make the competition even fiercer.

Any move for Gelhardt would likely require a significant financial commitment. Leeds are expected to value the striker at around £10 million, reflecting both his current ability and his future potential. From Leeds’ perspective, that price could attract interest from clubs who see Gelhardt as a player capable of delivering immediate impact while continuing to grow over the coming seasons.

For Southampton, the transfer would align well with the club’s long-term recruitment strategy. The Saints have often focused on signing young players with high ceilings—footballers who can develop further while contributing to the team’s success. Gelhardt fits that profile perfectly. His pace, creativity, and eye for goal would add a new dimension to Southampton’s attacking play, particularly against organised Championship defences that can be difficult to break down.

Introducing strong competition within the squad would also be beneficial. Gelhardt could challenge the likes of Ross Stewart, creative midfielder Finn Azaz, winger Morgan Fellows, and the promising Matsuki for attacking roles. Such competition often drives players to improve their performances and helps maintain high standards across the team.

Ultimately, Southampton must approach the summer transfer window with a clear and proactive strategy. Waiting for circumstances to unfold could leave them behind rival clubs. If Leeds are open to selling and Gelhardt is eager for consistent first-team opportunities, Southampton would be wise to act quickly and decisively once the transfer window opens. A move for the talented forward could prove to be one of the club’s most important signings of the summer.
