Kasper Schmeichel confirmed on Tuesday that he has suffered a serious shoulder injury, with an expected recovery period of 10 to 12 months through rehabilitation.
Former Arsenal F.C., FC Barcelona, and France star Thierry Henry reacted to the news during a CBS Golazo discussion alongside Schmeichel, Micah Richards, and his father Peter Schmeichel.
Henry expressed his support, saying he wished Schmeichel all the best. He admitted he had never faced a similar situation in his own career but remained hopeful that everything would turn out positively.
He also shared his desire for Schmeichel to retire on his own terms, rather than being forced out by injury. Henry acknowledged concerns that the goalkeeper may have already played his final match but emphasized that he hopes Schmeichel will still have control over when he decides to step away from football.
Henry’s message came amid growing concern about Schmeichel’s future in the game, especially as the injury update was revealed during the discussion.
His father, former Manchester United F.C. goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, also spoke emotionally about the situation. He admitted he does not want his son’s career to end because of such an injury and revealed that the family received worrying news earlier in the week.
Peter explained that shoulder injuries are particularly difficult for goalkeepers, as they constantly land on that part of the body. He added that Kasper had already been playing through the pain and even featured shortly after the initial injury.
He further revealed that during Celtic F.C.’s match against VfB Stuttgart, Kasper landed on the same shoulder again. He required another injection, which unfortunately led to an adverse reaction, worsening the situation.Welcome to Gboard clipboard, any text you copy will be saved here.
