A recent trade proposal suggests that the Detroit Red Wings could make a bold move to strengthen their defensive corps by acquiring veteran blueliner Justin Faulk from the St. Louis Blues.
In the proposed deal, Detroit would receive Faulk, while St. Louis would obtain defensive prospect William Wallinder and a 2026 first-round draft pick. The idea comes as the Red Wings continue their push toward securing a playoff berth and look to reinforce their blue line with an experienced, reliable presence.
Faulk is currently in the sixth season of a seven-year, $45.5 million contract and would bring stability, leadership, and versatility to Detroit’s defensive unit. Known for his steady two-way play, Faulk contributes effectively in his own zone while also offering offensive support when needed. This season, he has posted 11 goals and 21 assists for 32 points in 60 games, making him St. Louis’ top-scoring defenseman. Adding him would not only strengthen Detroit’s current playoff push but also provide a dependable veteran option for at least two postseason runs.
Detroit’s urgency to upgrade its defense has become increasingly apparent. The team has reportedly explored other options, including interest in Tyler Myers, though he is said to be unwilling to waive his no-trade protection to join the Red Wings. As a result, Detroit may pivot toward alternative targets like Faulk. NHL insider David Pagnotta has indicated that the Red Wings are actively searching for a top-four defenseman — ideally a right-handed shot — ahead of the trade deadline. Earlier in the season, Detroit also showed interest in Rasmus Andersson before he was moved, and they have been connected to Rasmus Ristolainen as well. With more than $45 million in available salary cap space, the Red Wings have the financial flexibility to make a significant addition before the March 6 deadline.
In exchange for Faulk, the Blues would receive Wallinder, a former 32nd overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft. Although Wallinder has yet to make his NHL debut, he has recorded 15 points in the AHL this season and could develop into a long-term piece on St. Louis’ blue line. The inclusion of a first-round pick would further bolster the Blues’ future assets.
St. Louis is widely expected to act as a seller ahead of the deadline, and league insiders believe Faulk is one of their most valuable trade chips. Despite being 34 later this month and holding partial trade protection, he is reportedly drawing interest from multiple Stanley Cup contenders due to his ability to log heavy minutes in all situations, including quarterbacking a power play.
With Detroit aiming to solidify its playoff position and St. Louis potentially reshaping its roster for the future, a deal centered around Faulk could be a logical and mutually beneficial move as the trade deadline approaches.
