Sammie Szmodics Bids Farewell to Ipswich Town After Securing Deadline Day Move to Derby County

Sammie Szmodics has officially completed a deadline day loan move from Ipswich Town to Derby County, with the attacking midfielder set to remain at Pride Park until the end of the current season.

With the January transfer window now firmly shut, clubs across the Premier League and the EFL have finalised their squads as they prepare for the decisive months ahead. Derby County were among those active until the very end, ensuring John Eustace had further reinforcements to bolster his side for the remainder of the campaign.

The Rams added four new players during the winter window, building on the 13 signings already made in the summer. Danish midfielder Oscar Fraulo arrived from Borussia Monchengladbach, Dutch winger Jaydon Banel joined on loan from Burnley, left-back Derry Murkin made the switch from FC Utrecht, and Szmodics became Derby’s final acquisition with a late loan move from Ipswich Town.

Szmodics’ arrival is particularly notable given his strong working relationship with Eustace. The two previously enjoyed great success together, and Derby supporters will be hopeful that the 30-year-old can rediscover the electric form he displayed under the manager during their time at Blackburn Rovers just two seasons ago.

Szmodics Sends Message to Ipswich Supporters

Following confirmation of his move, Szmodics took to social media to address Ipswich Town fans. In an Instagram story, the midfielder expressed his gratitude and wished his parent club well for the remainder of the season, encouraging them to push on and secure promotion — a sentiment that Derby fans may not necessarily echo given their own ambitions.

Ipswich currently sit just outside the automatic promotion places, with Middlesbrough and Coventry City occupying the top two spots. Despite Szmodics’ departure, Kieran McKenna’s side will still believe they have a strong chance of breaking into those positions as the season progresses.

Szmodics endured a difficult spell at Portman Road this campaign, starting only eight league matches and making 16 appearances in total. During that time, he managed just one goal and failed to register an assist. A move to Derby offers him the opportunity for a fresh start and, potentially, a return to his best form under a manager who knows how to get the most out of him.

Reunion With Eustace Sparks Optimism at Derby

At Derby, Szmodics joins a growing list of players who have previously worked under Eustace, including Dion Sanderson, Lewis Travis, Owen Beck, Danny Batth, and Andreas Weimann. This familiarity could help him settle quickly and make an immediate impact.

During the 2023/24 Championship season at Blackburn Rovers, Szmodics was sensational under Eustace, scoring an incredible 27 league goals and adding four assists. That remarkable tally saw him finish as the division’s top scorer and marked the most productive season of his career. Although John Dahl Tomasson also managed Blackburn during part of that campaign, Szmodics continued to thrive once Eustace took charge.

Now reunited at Derby, with the club firmly in the mix for a top-six finish, there is genuine excitement among Rams supporters about what Szmodics could bring. Given his past achievements under Eustace, expectations are high that he could once again play a decisive role in a promotion push.

Ipswich Adjust After Szmodics Exit

Meanwhile, Ipswich Town have moved quickly to offset Szmodics’ departure by bringing in Anis Mehmeti and Dan Neil, adding both depth and quality to McKenna’s squad. The Tractor Boys remain hopeful of achieving an immediate return to the Premier League without relying on the Englishman.

McKenna will instead look to players such as Jaden Philogene, Jack Clarke, Marcelino Núñez, and Sindre Walle Egeli to lead the charge back to the top flight — a group that provides plenty of attacking quality and optimism for the remainder of the season.
