Portsmouth head coach John Mousinho has addressed the club’s position on bolstering their wide attacking options, confirming that the club has examined potential right-winger additions but is being patient in the January transfer window.
Speaking to local media this week, Mousinho acknowledged fans’ desires for fresh attacking options but emphasised that any move must make clear sporting sense. “We’ve looked at it, we’ve gone through the process of reviewing players and assessing our squad needs,” he said, without committing to a specific deal. “Any signing we make has to be the right fit for the group we are building here.”
The comments echo earlier indications from Pompey’s camp that while strengthening out wide is desirable, the club is not in a rush to conclude deals unless they meet the manager’s criteria. Mousinho has reiterated that Portsmouth are evaluating a shortlist of potential January targets, including wide players capable of adding both creativity and depth on either flank.
Portsmouth have been linked in recent months with interest in American winger Griffin Yow, who has been monitored as a possible attacking reinforcement, although no formal bid has been confirmed. The 22-year-old American is reportedly expected to leave Belgian club Westerlo this January window, and sources have indicated Portsmouth are among clubs considering a move.
Mousinho’s cautious stance comes amid a Championship season where Portsmouth are balancing squad priorities, injury management and tactical consistency. With key wide players like Josh Murphy and Callum Lang contributing to the attack but also subject to competition for places, adding another winger remains on the club’s agenda — provided the right opportunity arises.
When pressed on a potential timeline for new arrivals, the Portsmouth boss reiterated that talks are ongoing but stressed the club will not compromise on quality. “We’re working hard behind the scenes, but we’re not going to force something for the sake of headlines,” Mousinho added.
The January transfer window remains open until the end of the month, giving Pompey time to make moves should the right winger — or other positions — become available at acceptable terms.
