January has reflected West Ham United’s campaign perfectly — chaotic, unpredictable and delicately poised. The Hammers have been busy in the transfer market, bringing in four new players already, with Axel Disasi expected to follow soon and free agent Raheem Sterling still being assessed. Alongside those arrivals, the club have sanctioned Lucas Paquetá’s exit, underlining the balancing act Nuno Espírito Santo faces as he attempts to rebuild without stripping the squad of quality.
With movement both in and out, there were fears that further departures before deadline day could unsettle West Ham’s plans. Instead, focus has shifted toward a potential late-window opportunity that could help offset Paquetá’s impending departure.
According to journalist Graeme Bailey, West Ham have been alerted to the availability of Marseille midfielder Angel Gomes. Intermediaries have reportedly approached the club about a possible deal for the England international, who only joined Marseille on a free transfer from Lille last summer. Under Roberto De Zerbi, Gomes has been used in a variety of roles — mainly from the right side or in an advanced midfield position — but he is also capable of dropping deeper when needed.
Wolves are thought to be leading the race and have already begun talks, but West Ham are among several clubs to have been contacted. Newcastle United, Everton, Brighton, Fulham, Sunderland and even a Championship side are also monitoring the situation.
The former Manchester United academy graduate, once labelled “very technical” by ex-England interim manager Lee Carsley, is believed to be keen on returning to England as he aims to strengthen his case for inclusion in Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup plans. While no transfer fee has been disclosed, Gomes could offer West Ham a creative and pragmatic replacement for Paquetá if the financial terms align. For Nuno, it may prove to be a smart late move to maintain momentum heading into the second half of the season.
