Discovered: Leila Wandeler: To celebrate Black History Month, West Ham United shines a light on the inspiring journey of Leila Wandeler, whose story is deeply rooted in resilience, culture, and pride.
Born and raised in Dakar, Senegal, Leila’s earliest memories of football are of dusty streets, a worn-out ball, and endless games with the local boys. Those moments not only sharpened her skills but also shaped her fearless attitude — one that continues to define her career in East London today.
Leila recalls how her curiosity about her heritage and Black history began at a young age. Growing up, she sought to understand the power, struggles, and triumphs that came before her — lessons that now inspire her both on and off the pitch.
Joining West Ham marked more than a football move; it was a celebration of identity and belonging. Leila’s journey from Dakar’s vibrant streets to the heart of East London embodies the essence of this month’s theme — honouring the past while building the future.
As she proudly represents West Ham, Leila continues to use her platform to inspire young girls, especially those from African backgrounds, to dream boldly and play without limits.
