Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has spoken warmly about the January departure of Mitchell Robertson, admitting the young defender’s exit slightly reshapes the club’s plans as the transfer window nears its conclusion.
Robertson completed a permanent move to Livingston earlier this month after coming through the Celtic academy system, ending a long association with the club. While first-team opportunities at Parkhead were limited, the decision was viewed internally as the right step for the player’s development and long-term career.
Speaking after Celtic’s latest league outing, Rodgers praised Robertson’s professionalism and attitude during his time at the club.
“Mitchell is a player who always conducted himself brilliantly,” Rodgers said. “He worked hard every day, remained patient, and stayed focused even when opportunities were limited. Those are qualities you respect as a coach.”
Rodgers acknowledged that Robertson’s exit does have a minor impact on squad depth, particularly during a busy period of the season, but stressed that Celtic are comfortable with their current defensive options.
“Whenever a player leaves in January, you naturally reassess,” he added. “But this was about allowing Mitchell to move on and get regular football. From the club’s perspective, we’re happy with the balance of the squad going into the final stretch.”
The move is understood to have come after positive discussions between the player, his representatives, and Celtic’s coaching staff, with all parties agreeing that consistent senior football was crucial at this stage of Robertson’s career.
Those close to the player say Robertson departs Parkhead with nothing but appreciation for the club that shaped him, and with determination to establish himself at his new side.
Before leaving, Robertson is believed to have thanked teammates and staff for their support, acknowledging the role Celtic played in his development both on and off the pitch.
Rodgers concluded with a personal message:
“He’s a good professional and a good person. We wish him every success going forward — enjoy your new home.”
Celtic are expected to remain calm rather than reactive in the closing days of the transfer window, with the focus firmly on maintaining momentum domestically while managing squad evolution responsibly.
