Bayern Munich & Harry Kane accused of getting ‘preferential treatment’ from referees as Werder Bremen boss complains over decisions…….
Werder Bremen head coach Ole Werner has voiced his frustration after claiming Bayern Munich and star striker Harry Kane receive “preferential treatment” from referees following controversial decisions in their latest Bundesliga clash.
Bayern came away with a narrow win against Bremen, but the match was marred by heated debate over refereeing calls. Werner highlighted two incidents involving Kane, suggesting the England captain benefitted from leniency that his players would not enjoy.
In one moment, Bremen’s defenders felt Kane went down too easily to win a free-kick in a dangerous position. Later, a penalty appeal for Bremen was dismissed despite what appeared to be contact in the box, leaving Werner furious at what he described as “double standards.”
Speaking after the match, the Bremen boss did not hold back. “It feels like when Bayern and Kane are involved, the whistle blows differently. Decisions that go against us are ignored, while small touches on them become fouls,” Werner said. “It is difficult for my players to compete fairly when the rules don’t seem to be applied equally.”
The comments have reignited a familiar debate in German football about Bayern’s perceived advantage when it comes to refereeing. The Bundesliga champions have long faced accusations from rival supporters that officials are reluctant to go against them in crucial moments.
Kane, who has enjoyed a prolific start to life in Germany since his move from Tottenham Hotspur, has been at the centre of several key refereeing calls this season. While the striker himself brushed off the criticism, saying he simply “plays his game,” the claims are adding fuel to wider frustrations about Bayern’s dominance.
The German FA (DFB) has not commented on Werner’s remarks, but such accusations could see the Bremen coach called to clarify his statements. Regardless, his outburst underscores the mounting pressure on referees to ensure impartiality in matches involving the Bundesliga giants.
For now, Bayern remain focused on maintaining their unbeaten start, while Bremen leave Munich with more questions than answers about fairness on the pitch.
