Don Hutchison claims Liverpool should have signed £81.5m attacker instead of Alexander Isak from Newcastle……
Former Liverpool midfielder Don Hutchison has suggested that Jurgen Klopp’s side may have missed a trick in the transfer market by not targeting a different high-profile forward instead of Newcastle United star Alexander Isak.
Speaking on pundit duty, Hutchison argued that Liverpool should have pushed harder to sign the £81.5 million-rated attacker who, in his view, would have been a better fit for the Reds’ attacking style than the Swedish striker. While Isak has impressed since joining Newcastle from Real Sociedad in 2022, Hutchison believes Liverpool needed a forward with a more complete skillset to rotate with Darwin Núñez and offer variety in Klopp’s frontline.
The former Scotland international highlighted that the unnamed £81.5m attacker, who has been linked with several top European clubs, possesses pace, technical flair, and versatility across the front three — qualities that could have refreshed Liverpool’s attack as they transition into a new era without Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mané.
“Liverpool have brilliant attacking players, but when you look at what this lad offers, it feels like a missed opportunity,” Hutchison explained. “He’s got that spark of unpredictability and would thrive under Klopp. Isak is top class, but if you’re spending big money, you want someone who completely changes your forward line.”
Liverpool have invested heavily in their attack over the past few seasons, bringing in Luis Díaz, Cody Gakpo and Núñez. However, questions remain over consistency in front of goal, with Mohamed Salah often carrying the bulk of the scoring responsibility.
Hutchison’s comments reignite debate over whether Liverpool need to be more aggressive in the market, particularly as rivals Manchester City and Arsenal continue to strengthen with marquee signings.
