I Shouldn’t Have Left” — Former Derby County Fan Favourite Regrets Exit as New Home Becomes Less Juicy

Portsmouth FC face an important contract decision as a key first-team player seeks a new deal that would represent a clear increase on his current terms.

Former Derby County star Nathaniel Mendez-Laing is reportedly having serious regrets about his summer departure from Pride Park, after a difficult spell at his new club has left him questioning the decision. Mendez-Laing, who joined Derby in July 2022 and became one of the club’s most beloved and influential players, left the Rams at the end of the 2024/25 season. The winger had been a key figure under Paul Warne, providing goals, experience and leadership as Derby pushed for Championship stability. His move to Bristol Rovers United — a club that promised a more prominent attacking role and an ambitious long-term project — has not gone as planned. Just a few months into the new season, the 32-year-old has started only a handful of matches and has struggled to make any real impact. Sources close to the player claim he has been frustrated by tactical changes, inconsistent team selection and a lack of clarity from the coaching staff. A source familiar with the situation revealed:  “Mendez-Laing expected a fresh challenge, but the environment hasn’t matched what he was told. The team is unstable, results aren’t coming, and he feels he left Derby too soon. He’s already admitting privately that he shouldn’t have left.” Meanwhile at Derby County, the team has enjoyed a strong start to the season. Several younger wingers and new signings have stepped up impressively, allowing the club to build momentum in the Championship and reducing the impact of Mendez-Laing’s exit. Despite this, Mendez-Laing remains a popular figure among Derby supporters, many of whom appreciated his professionalism, commitment and on-field contributions during his three years with the Rams. Although no discussions have taken place regarding a return, the winger is said to be “open” to the idea if Derby ever made an approach. For now, Mendez-Laing faces a challenging chapter at his new club — one that is turning far less juicy than he expected when he walked away from Pride Park.
