Portsmouth boss drops hint over level of spending and transfer window strategy in critical period for Championship hopes

Portsmouth, UK — With the January transfer window now open, Portsmouth manager John Mousinho has given football supporters their clearest indication yet of how the club plans to approach reinforcements during a pivotal period in their Championship survival fight.
Pompey currently sit just above the relegation zone and are under pressure to strengthen a squad that has been hit by injuries and inconsistent form in recent weeks. Mousinho has repeatedly stressed the importance of using the January market strategically rather than attempting high-profile splashes with limited financial firepower.

In recent statements, Mousinho suggested that while the club recognises the need to bring players in, there won’t be a dramatic change in transfer philosophy. He has indicated that Portsmouth are targeting a modest number of additions — potentially three to six — prioritising squad balance over headline signings. That reflects the club’s cautious spending approach, which so far has shown a net spend of £0m this window as deals have yet to be finalised.

Speaking to reporters, the Portsmouth boss acknowledged the difficulties of reinforcing amid injuries and a tight Championship fixture list but hinted that the club’s decision-making will be measured and pragmatic rather than reactionary. He underscored that targets are being shortlisted and that any incoming players must fit the team’s tactical needs and long-term sustainability goals.

This strategy is consistent with how Pompey have conducted business in recent windows — focusing on value and careful recruitment rather than big-ticket fees — a stance partly shaped by financial realities and the ownership’s emphasis on stability.
The January window closes on February 2, giving Portsmouth just weeks to finalise deals that could prove decisive in their bid to stay in the Championship for a second consecutive season.
