The 30-year-old has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal at Fratton Park and will link up with John Mousinho’s Portsmouth side, who currently sit 21st in the Championship.
Adams arrived at Derby County in January 2024 and has gone on to make 89 appearances for the Rams, scoring eight goals during that period. Earlier in his career, he played more than 100 games for Forest Green Rovers and also featured for Leyton Orient, Ebbsfleet United and Cardiff City.
Despite the move, Adams has remained an important part of Derby’s squad this season, appearing in 23 of their 26 Championship matches.
Portsmouth head coach John Mousinho expressed his satisfaction at completing the deal, describing Adams as a proven performer at Championship level. He highlighted the midfielder’s consistent displays over recent seasons, his athleticism and energy in central areas, and his strong leadership qualities, having previously captained Derby. Mousinho believes Adams will be a significant addition to the squad.
Earlier in the week, it appeared that Millenic Alli would be Portsmouth’s only new arrival, but the situation changed quickly as the club secured a player they have long admired for a fee of £500,000.
Adams is expected to add much-needed drive and mobility to a midfield area that has lacked stability for much of the campaign. He also brings valuable experience from Derby’s successful fight to avoid relegation last season, making his departure from the Rams something of a surprise.
