“I Left My Heart at the Stadium of Light” – Loan Star Sends Emotional Message After Painful Return, Reveals Why Sunderland Felt Like Home Forever

Arthur Masuaku has shared an emotional farewell message to Sunderland supporters after his loan spell was cut short and he returned to parent club RC Lens during the January transfer window.
The experienced left-back, who joined Sunderland on loan earlier in the season, departed as part of a wider squad reshuffle as the club looked to rebalance its options in defence. Club sources insist the decision was driven by tactical planning and squad structure rather than any concerns over Masuaku’s professionalism or commitment.
Despite spending only a brief period on Wearside, Masuaku quickly earned respect within the dressing room and among supporters for his work ethic, experience and calm presence on and off the pitch.
Taking to social media following his return to France, the 31-year-old admitted the move was an emotional one.
“I left my heart at the Stadium of Light,” Masuaku wrote.
“From the moment I arrived, I felt welcomed by the fans, my teammates and everyone at the club. Sunderland truly felt like home, even in such a short time.”
Behind the scenes, coaching staff are understood to have valued Masuaku’s influence, particularly his role in guiding younger players and maintaining standards in training. Although game time was limited at points, the defender remained fully committed to the squad’s objectives.
Masuaku acknowledged that returning to RC Lens was a difficult but necessary step as he looks to secure regular minutes for the remainder of the season.
“Leaving was painful,” he added. “But football decisions must be respected. I’ll always carry Sunderland with me and wish the club nothing but success.”
Sunderland officials are believed to have parted with the player on good terms, thanking him for his contribution and professionalism during his time at the club.
As Masuaku resumes his career in Ligue 1, his message has struck a chord with Sunderland supporters — a reminder that even short spells can leave a lasting impression at the Stadium of Light.
