Former Stoke City fan favourite Nick Powell has reflected on his emotional departure from Stoke City FC, admitting that his connection with the club remains strong — and leaving the door slightly open for a possible return in the future.

Powell officially left the Potters in the summer of 2023 after the expiry of his contract, bringing an end to a four-year spell at the bet365 Stadium. Since then, he has continued his career with Stockport County FC, where he has worked to re-establish consistency and fitness following injury-disrupted seasons.

A Difficult Goodbye

Speaking recently about his time in the Potteries, Powell acknowledged how tough it was to move on from a club where he had become a central figure.

> “Stoke was a big chapter in my career. I loved my time there — the fans, the staff, the dressing room. It’s never easy leaving somewhere you’ve given so much to,” he said.

“Once you’ve played at the bet365 and felt that support, it stays with you. Once a Potter, always a Potter.”

Powell joined Stoke in 2019 and quickly became one of the most technically gifted players in the squad. Across his time at the club, he made over 100 appearances in all competitions, contributing important goals and assists from midfield.

Fan Favourite Status

Despite battling injuries during parts of his Stoke career, Powell’s quality on the ball, eye for goal and leadership qualities made him a respected figure among supporters. During the 2020/21 and 2021/22 campaigns in particular, he was a key attacking outlet and often one of the first names on the team sheet when fully fit.

His professionalism and visible passion for the shirt strengthened his standing as a fan favourite during a transitional period for the club.

A Return? “Never Say Never”

While Powell is currently focused on his present club commitments, he did not completely dismiss the idea of one day returning to Stoke City.

> “Football changes quickly. You never know what the future holds. If the timing was right and it made sense for everyone, I’d always be open to a conversation. Stoke will always mean something to me.”

With Stoke City continuing their long-term rebuild in the Championship and striving for greater stability, the thought of a former leader and creative force returning in the future would undoubtedly excite sections of the fanbase.

For now, however, Powell’s comments serve as a reminder of the bond between club and player — one built on memorable moments, mutual respect, and unwavering support.

Because in the Potteries, as he put it, once you wear the red and white, that connection never truly fades.
