Portsmouth Football Club, commonly known as Pompey, have been dealt a significant setback ahead of their crucial fixture against Oxford United, as key defender Zak Swanson is set to miss the game due to injury. Swanson, who has been a regular presence in the team this season, was notably absent from the squad during Pompey’s recent trip to face Norwich City. It has now been confirmed that the 25-year-old did not travel with the team to Carrow Road, instead remaining on the south coast to recover from a knee injury he picked up during training over the international break.
The defender has been one of Pompey’s most dependable players throughout the campaign, making around 30 appearances in all competitions, including 27 league starts. His absence is particularly concerning given his consistency—he had only missed one match since early November prior to this setback, featuring in 26 of the club’s last 28 fixtures. However, this injury will now see him sidelined for multiple games in quick succession, including the upcoming home clash against Oxford United at Fratton Park.
Head coach John Mousinho acknowledged the situation and expressed cautious optimism about the severity of the injury. He explained that Swanson experienced discomfort in his knee during training and is currently undergoing further assessment. While Mousinho does not believe the issue is serious, he emphasized the importance of managing it carefully to avoid aggravating the problem. When asked about Swanson’s availability for the Oxford match, the manager admitted that it is unlikely the defender will be fit in time.
Swanson’s absence is a major blow for Pompey, particularly because of his versatility and strong performances this season. He has frequently filled in at left-back during periods when Conor Ogilvie was unavailable, and has also been deployed at centre-back when needed. His ability to adapt across the defensive line has made him an invaluable asset to the squad.
In his absence during the Norwich game, Ogilvie returned to his natural position at left-back, while Jojo Dia was brought in to partner in central defence. Despite the reshuffle, Pompey managed to secure a draw, which was celebrated by over 1,800 travelling supporters.
