Derby County were held to a 2-2 draw by newly promoted Cardiff City at Pride Park, with Bobby Clark stepping up to rescue a point for John Eustace’s side.

The Rams began brightly and created several promising opportunities early on. Corey Blackett-Taylor tested Nathan Trott, while Oscar Fraulo was also denied by the Cardiff goalkeeper. Clark then followed up on the rebound, only for Joel Bagan to clear his effort off the line. Cardiff threatened at the other end, forcing Jacob Widell Zetterstrom into an outstanding save to deny Ruben Colwill.

Despite Derby’s positive start, it was Cardiff who broke the deadlock. Cian Ashford was given too much space and made no mistake from Ronan Kpakio’s cross.

Derby quickly responded through Carlton Morris. Clark produced an excellent pass to release the striker, who battled his way into the box before finishing past Trott.

Cardiff restored their lead when Colwill created the opening for Yousef Salech, with Derby once again punished for failing to defend effectively.

However, the Rams showed good character to fight back again. Blackett-Taylor played his part in the build-up before Clark produced a powerful finish to bring Derby level.

The contest became quieter after that, with neither side managing to produce many clear chances. Salvesen forced Trott into a late save, but the winning goal never arrived.

Eustace was frustrated that Derby could not claim all three points but acknowledged the importance of avoiding defeat. While the attacking performance contained plenty of positives, the defensive mistakes will remain a major concern after Cardiff scored twice from situations Derby could have handled better.

Clark was undoubtedly the standout player. The £6 million signing registered both a goal and an assist, while his energy, movement and willingness to attack helped cause Cardiff problems throughout the match.

Mowatt also enjoyed an impressive home debut, completing 93 per cent of his passes and making several useful defensive contributions. Morris, meanwhile, opened his Derby account and led the line effectively.

Pace remains a priority

With the transfer window closing on September 1, Derby are expected to continue exploring the loan market.

Eustace has already suggested that the wide positions require attention, and adding more speed could give the team another dimension. Derby currently lack enough genuine pace out wide to consistently trouble opposing full-backs.

Recruiting one or two quick wide players would not only improve Derby’s attacking threat but could also create more opportunities for Clark to arrive in the penalty area and give Morris the service he needs.

Morris needs greater support

Morris has already demonstrated his value, but the striker understandably began to tire after another demanding performance.

Derby’s lack of experienced attacking options on the bench is another concern. With Salvesen the only natural striker available as an alternative, strengthening that area could become increasingly important as the Championship season progresses.
