Chelsea are reportedly preparing a major move in the transfer market as they aim to resolve ongoing concerns in their goalkeeping department, with Sunderland’s highly rated goalkeeper Robin Roefs emerging as a prime target. The Blues are said to be considering a substantial offer of around £60 million to secure the 23-year-old, whose performances this season have drawn widespread attention. However, despite this strong external interest, there is also a growing belief within the club that a solution could already exist internally.

Steve Bull suggests Wolves could be sitting on a ‘formidable’ duo for next season.

Currently, Robert Sanchez continues to serve as Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper under manager Liam Rosenior. Nevertheless, the Spanish international has struggled to maintain consistent form throughout the season. While he recently delivered a solid performance by keeping a clean sheet in a dominant 7–0 FA Cup victory over Port Vale, his earlier display in a 3–0 Premier League defeat to Everton raised concerns. In that match, Sanchez was criticized for failing to prevent a crucial second goal scored by Beto, which effectively sealed Chelsea’s defeat. Performances like this have intensified scrutiny over his role as the club’s long-term No. 1.

As a result, Chelsea have been actively scouting alternatives, with Roefs standing out due to his impressive consistency for Sunderland. The young goalkeeper has conceded just 34 goals in 28 league appearances while registering eight clean sheets—statistics that underline his importance to Sunderland’s solid mid-table position. His shot-stopping ability and composure have made him one of the most promising goalkeepers in the league, attracting attention not only from Chelsea but also from other top clubs such as Liverpool and Manchester City. However, compared to those teams—who already possess strong goalkeeping options—Chelsea arguably have a more urgent need to strengthen in that area.

Despite this external pursuit, Chelsea may ultimately decide against spending such a large sum, as they already have a highly promising young goalkeeper in Mike Penders. The 20-year-old Belgian is currently on loan at Strasbourg, where he has been delivering impressive performances. With eight clean sheets in 27 league matches, Penders has demonstrated maturity and reliability beyond his years. Notably, he previously worked under Rosenior during the manager’s time at Strasbourg, building a relationship that could ease his potential transition into Chelsea’s first team.

There is strong internal support for Penders within the club. Chelsea have already turned down interest from Tottenham, signaling their determination to retain him as part of their long-term plans. Senior figures at the club, including head of global goalkeeping Ben Roberts, are reportedly advocating for Penders to be promoted as the team’s first-choice goalkeeper next season. His backing reflects a high level of confidence in the youngster’s potential to develop into a world-class player.

Given these circumstances, Chelsea may ultimately prioritize developing Penders rather than committing a large transfer fee for Roefs. The club appears to be weighing the benefits of investing in proven external talent against nurturing an in-house prospect who could fulfill the same role in the future.

In other transfer-related developments, Chelsea are also believed to be close to securing a deal for Strasbourg midfielder Valentin Barco. Reports suggest that an agreement has already been reached, with the player expected to join the club later in the year. Additionally, Chelsea are planning to take firm action regarding Enzo Fernandez’s future. Despite ongoing speculation and interest from several top European clubs, the Blues are reportedly prepared to offer him an improved contract in order to secure his long-term commitment to the team.
